Director, Enterprise Project Management Office

General Position Summary

Responsible for managing, coordinating, reviewing, and monitoring all significant corporate and division initiatives and capabilities within the organization.  Interacts with business leadership and the Troika to help develop and lead the EPMO strategy that aligns with business objectives and priorities.  Responsible for aligning the EPMO roles to work within the Agile framework and supports the business divisions on the process for introducing new work and gaining approvals. Responsible for the growth development of the project managers and ensures they understand and support the agile framework. Coordinates IT governance and prioritization of key initiatives and capabilities.  Manages the project budget process and project forecasting for the company.  Guides organizational leaders in following a business case process when seeking approvals to invest in new or existing initiatives/capabilities.  Ensures the work of the EPMO adds value, is relevant to the strategy of the organization and meets the goals set by executive management.

Here are the essential job duties:  

  • Manages a portfolio of project and program management services following the agile framework for the organization, ensuring that investments and initiatives are aligned with the business strategy and priorities.  Ensures the EPMO is trained and helps the divisions initiate new work requests as needed and ensures the business leaders are considering the value associated with new work requests.  
  • Collaborates with divisional leaders, Executive Committee and the Troika to develop and manage project and program budgeting and prioritization.  Responsible for project financial forecasting monthly for the organization.  Oversees multi-million-dollar annual project budget.
  • Facilitates the prioritization of programs and projects based on changing business and compliance needs, resource capacity constraints, risk exposure, and interdependencies.
  • Monitors the delivery of business objectives and client experience for EPMO services. 
  • Engages with cross-functional business leaders to objectively analyze the organization’s ability to absorb change and adopt project and programs post-deployment.  Ensures the project managers are equipped to facilitate WoodmenLife’s organizational change management approach using our tools and templates to help prepare for change. 
  • Responsible for the tracking of the product/program on-time.  Responsible for ongoing project status reporting. Establishes standards and procedures for project reporting and documentation.
  • Defines and coordinates project governance processes including assessing project impacts and status updating to the Portfolio Management Team (PMT) and Project Advisory Board Acts as the chair of both committees.  Supports PMT and Senior Management in defining and achieving strategic objectives.
  • Develops project managers, by providing coaching, counseling and training on a continual basis.
  • Leverages existing projects/methodologies and identifies/implements improvements to and/or develops/implements new project/methodologies for Organization use.
  • Manages and facilitates the selection, implementation and maintenance of a formal methodology.
  • Responsible for performing duties of a Project Manager as needed.
  • Implements and administers end to end portfolio governance and portfolio management practices and processes, in alignment with WoodmenLife’s strategic goals and objectives, including integration with annual planning and budgeting processes.
  • Enforces methodologies that support continual improvement on strategic initiatives through measurement, data and metrics that align with organizational goals.
  • Serves as conduit for communication between project managers, functional leaders and leadership who make the strategic decisions for business projects with or without a BT component.
  • Assists in the identification of organizational project initiatives and consults with leaders across the organization to educate on the PMO framework.
  • Accountable for organization-wide education of EPMO policies, procedures and standards and consistent application across the entire portfolio of projects.  Engages regularly with all levels of leaders on strategy delivery and portfolio governance performance.
  • Manages the EMPO team, fostering knowledge building to be a center of excellence for best practices, processes, templates, lessons learned and historical project repository.
  • Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality in accordance with the expectations established by your supervisor and WoodmenLife policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Information Systems or a related field is required.
  • Advanced degree in Business/Information Services or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of ten years demonstrated experience in project management including the direction of technical staff in the implementation large sized projects is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience with implementing and directing IT governance processes.
  • Up to 3 to 5 years of previous experience with agile methods and tools.  Prefer certified agile training or scrum master background. 
  • Previous experience in change management strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience in the financial services industry required.
  • Prior management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Prior insurance product development experience strongly preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification required along with demonstrated knowledge and experience applying project management and development methodologies (including both waterfall and agile).
  • Strong facilitation skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills, analytical skills, decision making, planning, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to understand interdepartmental relationships and the dependencies as they affect a given project.
  • Previous budget experience and large-scale business case development required.  Ability to apply financial forecasting skills to project management methodology required.
  • Program and Project Governance. Subject matter expertise in managing complex portfolio encompassing both formalized programs, projects and out of cycle requests.
