Designs, recommends, implements, communicates the health and retirement programs to attract and retain top talent.  Ensures benefit programs support the strategic objectives, meet associate's needs, and are competitive within the marketplace while being cost-effective.  Oversees and manages the day to day benefits administration including vendor management.  Manages and develops staff.                       


  • Oversees day to day operations of benefit plans ensuring quality customer service. Recommends design in overall benefits program strategy.
  • Researches and assists in writing RFP's, selecting providers, insurers and brokers.  Assists in negotiating plan contracts.  Manages vendor relationships and vendor contracts ensuring service levels meet or exceed company expectations.
  • Directs the administration for all health and welfare company benefit programs.  Provides overall prioritization of work assignments and management of benefits team resources and activities.
  • Collaborates with internal partners and outside consultants to plan, design, recommend, and manage the implementation, communication and administration of enterprise wide company benefit programs.
  • Develops and implements benefits communication strategy.  Develops policies and procedures in support of benefits programs.  Integrates communications strategy to support and develop a Total Rewards approach.
  • Supports compliance with ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, and related laws, including required reporting.  Stays current on changing regulations to be able to provide guidance and direction to the team and develop strategies to mitigate risk exposure.
  • Tracks and analyzes current and developing legislation and regulations affecting benefits & develops organization responses to changes.
  • Develops budget, monitors plan utilization and costs.  Works with broker and vendors to ensure high quality value added benefits are available for associates while managing costs.
  • Oversees the 401(k) retirement plan administration and participates in the retirement committee
  • Manages the retiree medical program.
  • Educates associates to become better purchasers of all benefits so that they are knowledgeable and engaged in managing their health.
  • Ensures the Benefits team handles administration of all benefits plans.  Provides direction, leadership and coaching to Benefits team.
  • Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality in accordance with the expectations established by your supervisor and WoodmenLife policy.
  • Abides by all company security policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Eight or more years benefits experience with 5 years of experience in managing teams or projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with multiple plan designs.
  • Previous management experience and the ability to build an effective team.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and the proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of associates is required.
  • Strong presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience managing and partnering with external vendors is required.
  • Must be able to negotiate vendor selection/RFP process.
  • Ability to exercise planning skills and make sound business judgments.
  • Ability to coach, develop and guide the team to grow and take on new tasks and responsibilities.
  • Understanding and ability to apply government regulations related to benefits plans.
  • Ability to maintain highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • The ability to provide seamless, trustworthy, attentive and resourceful (S.T.A.R.) customer service.
  • Engages well with others and are passionate about providing an exemplary customer experience.


  • CBP and/or CEBS certifications.
